Old oak tree

I can’t believe that this old oak tree is only a 2 minute walk from my house and I’ve never photographed it before.

Images were taken with my converted IR Canon 30d with a 24-105mm which doesn’t seem to produce hot spots which can be common with a large number of lens on IR converted cameras.

The weather was slightly better last weekend so I managed to take out the IR camera for spin. I must of took around 50 IR images in under 20 minutes, it’s so much easier with a converted camera.

I am still trying to find my way with processing the images but so far I am pleased with the results.

Its arrived

My converted IR camera arrived this week so I took it today to see what it can do. Unfortunately it was a very dull and cloudy day together with being mid winter with very little green foliage about. Not the best conditions from IR photography.

This is the best image from a very poor batch of images. It can only get better...

Camera should be here at the end of the week which is great timing as I’ve got a location shoot planned with a new model I haven’t worked with before.

Hoya R72 Filter

As I am still waiting the return of my converted camera I took my 5D and my Ricoh GRDII for a spin with a Hoya R72 filter.

The Ricoh is seems to be a lot more sensitive to IR than the 5D as the same shot on the Ricoh was giving me an exposure of 1 second compared to 13 seconds on the 5D.

I also found it a lot easier to create colour IR images from the Ricoh compared to the 5D’s when using Lightroom to convert the Raw files. I was a bit more successful in creating colour IR using Canon’s DPP raw converter.

A couple of years ago I experimented with a Hoya R72 filter on an Olympus 5050z and then an Olympus E300. The images were ok, but the long exposure, not being able to see anything through the viewfinder left me very frustrated. After seeing many excellent examples of IR images, especially colour IR during the last couple of months I have decided to have another go.

This time I am going to use a camera that been specially converted to IR. I’ve purchased a second hand Canon 30D from Walters Photo Video Ltd which is now in the hands of ACS being converted to allow infrared images to be taken. The camera should be back with me sometime in January.

I am going to use this blog to record my progress with digital Infrared photography and hopefully I will create some tutorials on how to take and process IR images later in the year.

Expected 1-2 updates per month for the first couple of months. Time permitting I will try and update more often. Also check my other blog for updates on my latest non-infrared work
